A two-story hillside home in Azusa with five bedrooms, a pool deck and a view across the valley, furnished from scratch in warm neutrals, dark wood and soft blue.

The brief

This is a two-story home on a hillside in Azusa. It looks out over the rooftops below to the valley and the hills beyond, and after dark the whole valley lights up. There are five bedrooms, an open kitchen and dining area, a large living room, and a backyard with a pool, a spa, a covered patio and an outdoor kitchen. The Cozy Palette furnished the whole home, inside and out, for short stays.

The concept

This is one of Tammy's signature homes, a custom design where every room was planned from scratch. The house came with dark wood floors, espresso cabinets and white shutters, so the plan was to keep things warm and settled rather than fight that. Oatmeal, cream and soft tan carry the furniture, with dark wood pieces to match the floors. Blue and mustard come in through pillows and throws, so the rooms feel calm but not flat. Each bedroom got its own bed and its own feel, so no two rooms look the same. Outside, the view is the main event, so we set up places to lounge, eat and sit by the pool and look out at it, by day and at night.

Room by room

Living roomA large oatmeal sectional with a chaise wraps the room. Navy, blue-and-white patterned and mustard pillows sit along the back, with a fringed taupe throw over the chaise. A dark wood trunk coffee table with a woven runner and a small glass terrarium sits on a grey and cream lattice rug. A dark wood end table holds a white orchid, and a tall palm fills the corner. White shutters cover the windows, and sliding glass doors open to the covered patio.
Kitchen and diningEspresso raised-panel cabinets frame the kitchen, with granite counters and a full-height granite slab behind the range under a stainless hood. A double wall oven and a French-door fridge sit in the cabinet wall, and a long island runs down the middle. In front of it, a trestle dining table seats six in upholstered chairs with nailhead trim.
Primary bedroomA cream linen sleigh bed with a tufted headboard, a rolled footboard and nailhead trim anchors the room. A matching herringbone storage bench sits at the foot of the bed. White bedding is finished with a blue and white pillow. Black nightstands hold rope-wrapped lamps, and a black dresser with a framed mirror stands on the far wall, with a small gold branch sculpture on top.
Tufted king bedroomA brown tufted wingback bed sits on a wide upholstered frame, dressed in white bedding with a yellow patterned throw. Dark wood nightstands on either side hold burlap-shade lamps on rope-knot bases. White shutters cover windows on two walls.
Cream bedroomA beige tufted sleigh bed with a tufted footboard is made up in white bedding with a mustard and white patterned throw. A whitewashed dresser with a framed mirror stands beside it, and a gold geometric lamp sits on the nightstand.
Balcony bedroomA whitewashed wood bed with a linen headboard and nailhead trim is dressed in plain white bedding. Whitewashed nightstands hold black-shade brass lamps. A seafoam drape hangs at the French doors, which open to a small balcony with an iron railing and a green hillside beyond.
Two-queen bedroomTwo beds with dark headboards are made up in white bedding with blue fringed throws. A whitewashed nightstand stands between them with a twin-globe lamp, and a bright painting of a row of owls hangs above. White shutters cover the windows on either side.
Primary bathA deep drop-in tub is set in white tile under a wide shuttered window, with chrome fixtures and a small pot of lavender on the ledge. A round iron and wood shelf with greenery hangs on the side wall.
Pool deckA stamped-concrete patio steps up to a stone pool deck with two teak loungers and a closed market umbrella. A bronze four-globe lamp post stands among banana plants and pink hydrangeas, with palms around the edge of the yard and a pergola at the far end. Past the hedge, the view opens out across the valley.
