The brief
This is a single-story home in El Monte. It has a living room with a fireplace and a bay window, a separate dining room, a kitchen with a breakfast nook, and three bedrooms. Two bedrooms have one bed each, one with a bath off it, and the third has two beds side by side. The Cozy Palette furnished the whole home for short stays.
The concept
The house is bright, with white walls, white blinds and light oak floors, so the plan was to bring in warmth through colour. A rust velvet sectional anchors the living room, with olive and mustard repeating through the armchairs, pillows and bedrooms. Walnut frames and tapered legs give it a relaxed mid-century feel. The pieces were chosen to hold up to a full house: metal bistro chairs at the dining table, a deep sectional with room for everyone, and white bedding that is simple to wash and turn over between guests. Each bedroom has its own headboard colour and its own set of prints, so the rooms are easy to tell apart.
Room by room
Living room
A rust velvet sectional with a chaise faces a wall-mounted TV over a light oak fluted console. Navy chevron, mustard and cream pillows line the back. A white teardrop coffee table sits on a faded blue and rust rug. At the far end, two green corduroy armchairs on walnut frames flank a black tile fireplace, with a small brass tray table between them and a gold and green leaf print above the mantel.
Dining room
A whitewashed oak table seats eight on white metal bistro chairs, under a crystal flush-mount light. Three soft pastel canvases hang on the wall beside a potted plant. A white barn door slides open to one of the bedrooms.
Breakfast nook
A round dark wood bistro table sits in a three-sided bay window, with a bowl of lemons on top and two rust boucle chairs on black legs. White blinds filter the light from the greenery outside.
Cream bedroom
A cream channel-stitched bed is made up in white bedding with olive velvet and striped pillows, a slate velvet throw and folded towels. Brass tray side tables hold brown ceramic lamps with tan shades. Three botanical prints in mustard, blue, black and coral hang between the windows, and a white barn-door closet runs along one wall.
Charcoal bedroom
A charcoal channel-tufted bed holds blue and herringbone pillows and a grey velvet throw, with a tan leather bench at its side. A black tray table holds a carved wood lamp. Three abstract prints in orange, blue and stripes hang above the bed, and a door opens to a bath with a glass shower.
Green two-bed bedroom
