An empty upstairs apartment in Alhambra became a warm, easy place for families. Soft color, plants and a twin-bed room for the kids.
The brief
This two-bedroom, one-bath apartment in Alhambra sits on the upper level of a small building, up a flight of stairs from a shared hallway. It sleeps four, and the brief names families with kids and small groups as the guests it is for. The unit was unfurnished when the owner came to The Cozy Palette, and the job covered every room.
The owner wanted it casual, bright and family-practical. Twin beds in the second bedroom were part of the plan, so the unit works for a family with children.
Before & after
The concept
The white walls and dark wood-look plank floors were already clean and bright, so we let the furniture bring the warmth. Orange and patterned pillows, a tan chair, a multicolor rug and soft blush art keep the living room relaxed, not formal.
In the bedrooms we went a little deeper. A teal velvet headboard anchors the primary bedroom, and black metal twin beds with terracotta pillows give the second room its own feel. Plants in almost every room tie it all together.
Room by room
Living room
A grey loveseat with orange and patterned pillows faces a white marble-look coffee table with a brass frame, set on a multicolor rug. A tan chair with a sheepskin throw, a navy tufted ottoman, a light oak slatted TV console and three blush abstract canvases fill out the room.
Kitchen
Grey shaker cabinets and speckled white counters frame a stainless gas range under a stainless hood, next to a white fridge. A white kettle and a small caddy of cooking oils sit ready on the counter.
Dining area
A round walnut table with white metal bistro chairs, woven placemats and white bowls sits by the window under a ceiling fan. A blue, grey and blush abstract canvas and a slim faux tree soften the corner.
Primary bedroom
A large bed with a deep teal velvet tufted headboard is dressed in white bedding, a taupe throw and mustard and black patterned pillows. Three watercolor wave prints hang above, with a white side table and lamp on one side and a cognac chair and olive tree in the corner.
Second bedroom
Two twin beds with black metal and wood frames share a black nightstand with a lamp. Terracotta and woven pillows, taupe throws, two blush and navy abstract prints and a ficus tree keep the room warm.
Bathroom
White subway tile surrounds the tub behind a sliding glass door, beside a dark wood floating vanity with a chrome faucet. Wall-mounted pump bottles, a small potted plant and a large navy and tan abstract print finish the room.
