Desert Modern 4-Bedroom Home in Yucca Valley
A single-story home in the high desert near Joshua Tree, furnished from scratch with cool blues, soft blush and warm wood, then opened up to the hills outside.
The brief
This is a single-story home in Yucca Valley, in the high desert near Joshua Tree. It sits on an open lot with boulders, yucca and Joshua trees, with open views of the surrounding hills. Inside there are four bedrooms, a large living room, a separate dining area, and a large kitchen. The Cozy Palette furnished the whole home and the yard for short stays.
The concept
The house already had bright white walls and pale marble-look floors, so the light was never the problem. The aim was to give each room its own colour and its own mood, so the place feels calm and clean but never plain. Navy, slate grey and soft blue carry the shared rooms. The bedrooms each take a different turn: warm cream and mustard, deep navy, blush and charcoal, and coral with grey. Outside, the plan was simple. The view does the work, so we gave guests good places to sit and look at it, by day and after dark.
Room by room
Living room
A big grey sectional wraps the corner, faced by a pair of navy velvet wingback chairs with nailhead trim and tasselled grey pillows. A black coffee table sits on a navy and ivory medallion rug. A long black media console with frosted drawers runs along one wall, with a macrame hanging and blue fern prints around the room. Sheer white curtains with grey linen panels soften the windows, and a bronze ceiling fan hangs under the crown molding.
Kitchen
Espresso shaker cabinets run up to the ceiling, with white marble-look counters and a grey glass-tile backsplash. A large island gives room to cook and gather, with an upholstered stool at one end. A stainless side-by-side fridge and microwave sit in the cabinet wall, and two black cage pendants hang over the island.
Dining room
A long dark-wood table seats ten in oatmeal linen chairs. The table is set with sage stoneware on blue woven chargers, with a dried-flower arrangement in a fluted vase. An iron cage chandelier with filament bulbs hangs above, a black sideboard with crystal lamps stands at the far wall, and a wide window looks out to the desert hills.
Cream and mustard bedroom
A cream channel-tufted headboard with a nailhead edge anchors the room. Mustard textured pillows and a navy embroidered lumbar sit on white bedding, with a tan and white striped throw across the foot. Black nightstands hold woven rattan lamps, and a grey and white abstract hangs above the bed. Camel drapes over sheers frame the windows.
Navy bedroom
A navy nailhead headboard and a navy velvet throw over white bedding set the tone. A grey tufted bench on walnut legs sits at the foot of the bed, beside a grey mirrored nightstand with a glass lamp. Charcoal drapes hang over sheers, and the window looks out to the desert.
Blush bedroom
A charcoal tufted wingback headboard is paired with blush and lavender textured pillows, a grey faux-fur accent and an olive faux-fur throw. White mid-century nightstands hold blush ceramic lamps. A gold geometric stool with a pink seat sits by the window, under blush and navy colour-block drapes, with a pink and gold abstract above the bed.
Two-queen bedroom
Two grey upholstered queen beds sit side by side, dressed with coral and navy pillows, striped lumbars and charcoal throws. Rustic wood benches with cream knit cushions sit at the foot of each bed. A mirrored-trim nightstand stands between them, with blue and coral abstract prints on either side of the window.
Bathroom
A long espresso vanity with a marble-look top and a brushed-nickel faucet sits under a wide mirror and a black and white three-light bar. A window over the counter brings in daylight, with a framed graphic print and white towels on the wall.
Hot tub deck
The hot tub sits under a dark timber frame strung with café lights. Two teal folding loungers rest on the concrete pad beside it. A rock garden with yucca surrounds the deck, with Joshua trees and open hills beyond.
Fire pit
Black Adirondack chairs form a wide circle around a copper fire bowl on gravel. Boulders and yucca line the edge, and the hot tub frame sits off to one side. From here the view runs out across the hills.
