An empty single-storey desert home in Yucca Valley became a warm, easy place to stay, with a yoga room, a porch swing and a yard full of Joshua trees.

The brief

This is a single-storey ranch home in Yucca Valley, set on a wide desert lot with Joshua trees and mountains on the horizon. The before photos show it empty, mid-paint and unfurnished when it came to The Cozy Palette. There are three bedrooms, two bathrooms in the photos, and a spare room that became a yoga room. With a king, a queen and two twin beds, the bedrooms sleep six.

The concept

This is one of Tammy's signature homes, a custom design where every room was planned from scratch. The desert sets the palette: warm wood, rattan and woven textures, soft whites, charcoal accent walls, and pops of mustard, coral and rust taken from the sunsets outside. Inside, a patterned accent wall gives the kitchen a focal point, and a big rattan pendant ties the kitchen, dining and living areas into one open space.

Every piece was chosen for how it works, how easily it cleans and how well it lasts. You can see it in the photos: wood tables and benches, upholstered pieces with simple lines and no fussy detail, and crisp white bedding that washes easily between stays. Outside, the yard was set up for the reason people come to the high desert: a porch swing under the covered patio, a long picnic table, a fire-pit circle and string lights between the Joshua trees.

Room by room

Living roomA grey tufted sectional with a rust velvet round pillow, a geometric cushion and a white faux-fur throw faces a wall-mounted TV. A white oval coffee table with a wood tray, a rattan butterfly chair and an arc floor lamp complete the seating area. Striped poufs sit by the wall, a macrame hanging softens the charcoal accent wall, and the front door is painted chartreuse. Before, the room was empty, with paint cans and debris on the floor.
KitchenWhite shaker cabinets with black bar pulls, charcoal counters and a white marble-look waterfall island. A black-white-and-gold star-pattern accent wall now sits beside the fridge, with a framed map print. In the before photo the same cabinets stand against a plain grey wall, with the counters cluttered.
Primary bedroomA king bed with a chevron wood headboard, mustard and charcoal pillows, a taupe throw, and a wood bench with a sheepskin at the foot. Rattan-shade lamps sit on scalloped nightstands, and line-art prints hang on the charcoal accent wall. Sheer and linen curtains frame the windows. Before, the bed was unmade, with no art or lamps.
BackyardThe rear of the house is now white with a black patio cover, a porch swing, a picnic table with an aloe and string lights overhead. Before, the stucco was tan with white patio posts, over a bare dirt yard.
Dining areaA wood plank table with brown leather-look chairs, set with seagrass placemats, white bowls and wine glasses. A tiered rattan pendant hangs above, with three abstract desert prints on the wall.
Queen bedroomA walnut bed with coral textured pillows and a black-and-white lumbar pillow. Rope pendant sconces on wood brackets hang over cane-front nightstands, and a white sliding closet holds a luggage rack.
Twin bedroomTwo navy upholstered twin beds with cognac leather-look pillows and tasselled cushions, with a walnut nightstand and ceramic lamp between them. A macrame panel covers the window, and sun and arch prints hang on either side.
Hall bathroomA white shaker vanity with a marble-look top and brushed-nickel faucet. A vintage frosted-glass pendant hangs above, beside framed leaf line art and small succulents.
Primary bathroomA white vanity with a charcoal quartz top, carved white wall panels and a frosted shower door, opening straight onto the primary bedroom.
Yoga roomA black ceiling over a dark plank floor, a wall rack of rolled yoga mats, a rattan shelf with cork blocks and floor cushions. A macrame dreamcatcher hangs by the sliding door to the patio.
Covered patioA black-painted patio cover shades a rope porch swing with a striped blanket, Moroccan-style lanterns, a grill and two black wire chairs. String lights run out toward the Joshua trees and the mountains beyond.
Desert yardA picnic table with benches, a fire-pit seating circle and stone-edged paths spread among the Joshua trees, with string lights on posts.
